Croft's

The metre 66664444 was first used by the English Puritan John Pullain for Psalm 148 in the "Anglo-Genevan" Psalter of 1558 and later used by John Craig for Psalm 136. It appeared in Tate and Brady's New Version (London, 1696) for both Psalms. Croft's tune appeared in Divine Companion, or David's Harp New Tun'd, second edition, by H. Playford (London, 1707) accompanying Psalm 136, though known nowadays as Croft's 148th. The adaptation now known as Croft's 136th appeared in 1709.
